The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has called for immediate de-escalation and maximum restraint in the Gulf region following coordinated military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran.
In a statement issued by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Nigeria urged all parties involved in the unfolding situation to exercise the highest level of restraint and avoid actions that could intensify hostilities or further destabilize the region. The government emphasized the importance of prioritizing diplomatic engagement and dialogue over confrontation in order to restore calm and avert broader conflict.
The statement highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter and the Geneva Convention, including respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the peaceful settlement of disputes. It stressed that sustainable peace can only be achieved through constructive engagement and adherence to international norms, particularly in times of heightened tension.
Nigeria also reaffirmed its longstanding foreign policy stance rooted in non-alignment, multilateral cooperation, and support for diplomatic efforts within regional and international frameworks. The government welcomed confidence-building and mediation initiatives, encouraging all stakeholders to pursue peaceful solutions in the interest of collective security and shared prosperity.
The advisory reflects widespread global concern over escalating tensions in the Middle East, with various countries and international organisations calling for restraint and negotiation to prevent further loss of life and safeguard regional stability.
