A 40-year-old Nigerian national, Leslie Chinedu Mba, has been sentenced to 19 years in a United States federal prison for his involvement in a $4 million romance scam and business email compromise scheme.
According to US federal authorities, Mba played a central role in coordinating fraudulent activities that targeted individuals and businesses through deceptive online relationships and manipulated email communications. Prosecutors said victims were persuaded to transfer large sums of money under false pretenses, resulting in significant financial losses.
Court documents revealed that the scheme involved creating fake online identities to build trust with victims before requesting funds, as well as intercepting or spoofing business email accounts to divert payments into accounts controlled by the conspirators.
US officials described the sentencing as part of ongoing efforts to combat transnational cybercrime and financial fraud. They emphasized that romance scams and business email compromise operations continue to pose serious threats to individuals and corporate entities worldwide.
Authorities reiterated warnings for the public to exercise caution when engaging in online relationships or processing financial transactions via email, urging verification of requests and heightened cybersecurity awareness to prevent similar schemes.
