Members of Nigeria’s Shia Muslim community are mourning the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was confirmed killed following joint United States and Israeli airstrikes on Tehran. Iranian state media and multiple international reports confirm that Khamenei, who had led Iran since 1989, died as a result of the strikes, prompting Iran to declare a period of mourning.
Following the announcement, Shia groups and sympathizers within Nigeria expressed sorrow and solidarity, linking their grief to broader spiritual and religious sentiments shared with Shia communities globally. Similar mourning events and processions have been reported in other countries as followers observe traditional rites and prayers to honour his leadership and legacy.
The death of Khamenei, a figure of deep significance in Shia Islam and a central authority in Iran’s political and religious structure, has resonated across international Shia networks, including in Nigeria, where many adherents have reflected on his influence and called for peace amid regional tensions.
