Some parents across Nigeria have called on the Federal Government to scrap the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme if adequate measures cannot be put in place to guarantee the safety of corps members.
The demand follows growing concerns over the security of young graduates participating in the mandatory national service programme, particularly those posted to areas affected by insecurity.
According to several parents and guardians, the primary responsibility of the government is to ensure the protection of citizens, including corps members deployed across different parts of the country.
They argued that if authorities cannot adequately guarantee the safety of participants in the programme, the scheme should either be restructured or discontinued.

The National Youth Service Corps, established in 1973, was designed to promote national unity by posting graduates to states outside their region of origin for a year of service.
However, recent security concerns in parts of the country have intensified debates about the future of the programme, with some stakeholders calling for reforms that would prioritise the safety and welfare of corps members while preserving the scheme’s original objective of fostering national integration.
