President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the official posting of 65 Nigerian ambassadors and high commissioners to various countries and international missions, including the United Nations.
The appointments comprise 31 non-career ambassadors and 34 career diplomats who will represent Nigeria across different regions of the world. The Senate had earlier confirmed the ambassadors-designate in December last year following the president’s nominations.
Among the non-career ambassadors assigned to key missions are Senator Grace Bent to Lome, Togo; Senator Ita Enang to South Africa; Victor Ikpeazu to Spain; Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu to Tel Aviv, Israel; Mahmoud Yakubu to Qatar; and Paul Oga Adikwu to the Vatican City Holy See.
Other notable appointments include Reno Omokri to Mexico City, Mexico; Olufemi Pedro to Australia; Lateef Kayode Are to the United States; Joseph Sola Iji to Russia; Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations; and Femi Fani-Kayode to Germany.
Former Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Folorunso Adewole, has been posted to Ottawa, Canada, while Yakubu N. Gambo will serve in Saudi Arabia and Professor Nora Ladi Daduut will represent Nigeria in Seoul, South Korea.
The list also includes several career diplomats who will head Nigerian missions across Africa, Europe, Asia, and other regions. These include Ambassador Nwabiola Ezenwa Chukwumeka to Cote d’Ivoire; Besto Maimuna Ibrahim to Niamey, Niger; Monica Okwuchukwu Enebichi to Sao Tome and Principe; Mohammed Mahmud Lele to Algeria; Ahmed Mohammed Monguno to Cairo, Egypt; and Jane Adams Michael to Kingston, Jamaica.
Other career ambassadors posted include Alexandra Clark-Omeru to Lusaka, Zambia; Geoffrey Lioma David to Bamako, Mali; Odumah Yvonne Ehinosen to Malabo, Equatorial Guinea; Segun Ige to Beirut, Lebanon; and Ruben Abimbola Samuel to Rome, Italy.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the United Kingdom has already granted agrément for Nigeria’s High Commissioner-designate, Ambassador Aminu Dalhatu. France has also approved the posting of Ambassador Ayo Oke as Nigeria’s envoy to Paris.
According to the ministry, diplomatic notifications requesting agrément for the remaining ambassadors have been sent to the respective host countries in line with international diplomatic procedures.
President Tinubu has also directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to immediately begin the induction programme for the ambassadors-designate and high commissioners ahead of their deployment to their respective missions.
