Federal Government Bans Import of Vehicles Without Certification

Policy aims to improve road safety and prevent entry of substandard automobiles into Nigeria

The Federal Government has announced a ban on the importation of vehicles that do not possess the required certification, as part of efforts to enhance road safety and regulate the quality of automobiles entering the country.

Authorities said the new directive is intended to curb the influx of substandard vehicles that often pose safety risks to road users and contribute to accidents on Nigerian roads. The policy requires that all imported vehicles meet established safety and regulatory standards before they can be cleared for entry into the country.

Officials noted that certification helps confirm that vehicles comply with internationally recognised manufacturing and safety requirements, including roadworthiness, emissions standards, and structural integrity. Vehicles without proper documentation or certification will no longer be allowed into the Nigerian market under the new regulation.

The Federal Government explained that the move forms part of broader efforts to strengthen vehicle inspection processes, improve road transport safety, and protect consumers from purchasing unsafe automobiles.

Stakeholders in the automotive sector say the policy could also encourage higher quality imports and support ongoing initiatives to regulate Nigeria’s rapidly expanding vehicle market while promoting safer roads nationwide.
