Aproko Doctor Warns Nigerians Against Consuming Spoiled, Fungus-Infested Tomatoes (“Ata Esha”)

Health expert cautions that contaminated food items may pose serious long-term health risks

Popular health educator Aproko Doctor has warned Nigerians against the consumption of spoiled tomatoes and other fungus-infested food items commonly referred to as “Ata Esha” or “Awarawa,” cautioning that they may pose serious health risks if regularly consumed.

According to the health expert, such food items often contain visible signs of decay and fungal growth, which can introduce harmful toxins into the body when ingested. He advised the public to avoid purchasing or using overripe, moldy, or improperly stored tomatoes, especially those showing signs of spoilage.

He further explained that prolonged consumption of contaminated food could increase the risk of foodborne illnesses and other health complications, stressing the importance of proper food hygiene and safe storage practices.

Consumers were also urged to carefully inspect food items before purchase and preparation, and to dispose of any produce that shows signs of rot, discoloration, or fungal contamination.

The warning forms part of ongoing public health education efforts aimed at reducing cases of food poisoning and improving awareness around safe dietary practices in Nigeria.

Health advocates continue to encourage Nigerians to prioritise food safety, proper washing of produce, and adherence to hygienic food handling practices to protect overall well-being.
