The Christian Association of Nigeria has declared Sunday, June 14, 2026, as “Black Sunday” in honour of victims of terrorist attacks and other violent incidents across Nigeria.
The association said the observance is intended to provide an opportunity for Christians nationwide to mourn those who have lost their lives to insecurity, while also offering prayers for affected families and communities.
According to CAN, the initiative seeks to draw attention to the human cost of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of violence that have impacted various parts of the country in recent years.
Churches across Nigeria are expected to participate in special prayer sessions, remembrance services, and other activities aimed at honouring victims and expressing solidarity with those affected by attacks.
The declaration comes amid continued concerns over security challenges in several regions, with religious leaders, civil society groups, and community stakeholders calling for stronger measures to protect lives and restore peace.
CAN reiterated the need for unity, compassion, and collective action in addressing the country’s security challenges, while urging authorities to intensify efforts to safeguard communities and prevent further loss of life.
The planned observance is expected to serve as both a moment of reflection and a call for renewed commitment toward achieving lasting peace and security across the nation.
