NEC Approves N83.21 Billion to Combat Flooding, Climate Disasters Nationwide

Funding to support Anticipatory Action Task Force aimed at reducing the impact of floods and other climate-related emergencies

The National Economic Council has approved N83.21 billion for the implementation of an Anticipatory Action Task Force designed to mitigate the impact of flooding and other climate-related disasters across Nigeria.

The approval reflects the Federal Government's commitment to strengthening disaster preparedness and improving the country's capacity to respond proactively to climate-related emergencies before they escalate into humanitarian crises.

According to officials, the funding will support early warning systems, emergency preparedness, community resilience programmes, and coordinated interventions aimed at reducing the devastating effects of seasonal flooding and other climate-induced disasters.

Nigeria has experienced recurring floods in recent years, resulting in the loss of lives, destruction of homes, displacement of communities, damage to infrastructure, and significant losses in the agricultural sector.

The Anticipatory Action Task Force is expected to work with federal and state governments, emergency management agencies, meteorological institutions, and other stakeholders to improve disaster risk management and ensure timely interventions in vulnerable areas.

Climate experts have consistently advocated for increased investment in preventive measures, noting that early preparedness is more cost-effective than responding to disasters after they occur.

Stakeholders believe the initiative could strengthen Nigeria's resilience to climate change, protect vulnerable communities, and reduce the economic and humanitarian impact of floods and other extreme weather events.

The approval comes as authorities intensify efforts to address the growing challenges posed by climate change and enhance national preparedness for future environmental emergencies.
