Swiss Museums Return 18 Benin Artefacts to Nigeria

Repatriated cultural treasures mark another milestone in efforts to recover looted heritage taken during the 1897 Benin Expedition.

Switzerland has returned 18 Benin artefacts to Nigeria, marking another significant step in the global campaign to repatriate cultural treasures looted during the 1897 British expedition to the Benin Kingdom.

The artefacts, which had been held in Swiss museums for decades, were officially handed over to Nigerian authorities as part of ongoing international efforts to restore the country's cultural heritage.

The returned items include valuable historical and artistic objects that reflect the rich history, craftsmanship and cultural identity of the ancient Benin Kingdom.

Nigerian officials welcomed the repatriation, describing it as an important victory for cultural justice and a testament to growing international recognition of the need to return looted African artefacts to their countries of origin.

The latest return adds to a growing list of Benin Bronzes and other cultural treasures repatriated by museums and institutions across Europe and North America in recent years.
