36.2 Million Nigerians Face Hunger Crisis During 2026 Lean Season, Save the Children Warns

Humanitarian organisation says millions across 26 states and the FCT are at risk of acute food and nutrition insecurity.

Save the Children International has warned that about 36.2 million Nigerians across 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory are expected to face acute food and nutrition insecurity during the ongoing 2026 lean season.

The organisation said millions of households are struggling to access enough safe and nutritious food as rising food prices, economic hardship and other challenges continue to worsen hunger across the country.

According to Save the Children, children, pregnant women and other vulnerable groups are among those most at risk of malnutrition during the period.

The lean season, which falls between planting and harvest, is typically marked by dwindling food supplies, rising food costs and increased pressure on household incomes.

The organisation called for urgent humanitarian intervention and stronger government support to protect vulnerable families from worsening hunger and malnutrition.

It stressed that timely action is needed to improve access to food, strengthen nutrition programmes and prevent the crisis from escalating further.

Save the Children warned that without immediate intervention, millions of Nigerians could face severe food shortages and increased nutritional challenges before the next harvest season.
