The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, has declared that the telecommunications company belongs to Nigerians and should not be viewed solely as a South African business.
Toriola made the statement amid growing concerns over xenophobic tensions and the impact such developments could have on relations between Nigeria and South Africa.
According to the MTN Nigeria CEO, the company has deep roots in Nigeria, with Nigerian shareholders, employees, customers and other stakeholders playing significant roles in its operations and growth.
He stressed that MTN Nigeria should be seen as an important part of the Nigerian economy rather than merely an extension of a foreign company.
“MTN Nigeria belongs to Nigerians, not South Africa alone,” Toriola said.
The statement comes amid renewed conversations around xenophobia and the need to prevent diplomatic or social tensions from affecting businesses and investments that provide jobs and services to millions of people.
MTN Nigeria remains one of the country's largest telecommunications operators, serving millions of subscribers and playing a major role in Nigeria's digital and telecommunications sector.
Toriola's remarks underline the interconnected nature of major African businesses and the importance of protecting economic cooperation between countries, even during periods of diplomatic or social tension.
