President makes light-hearted reference to recent public debate over First Lady’s comments on supporting petty traders.President Bola Tinubu has playfully referred to the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, as “Iya Alakara,” meaning “Mama Akara Seller,” in an apparent light-hearted reference to the recent controversy surrounding her comments about small-scale businesses.
The President made the humorous remark amid ongoing public discussions over the First Lady’s comments on empowering petty traders, including akara sellers and other small business owners.
Oluremi Tinubu had earlier disclosed that ₦100 million had been donated to support petty traders, clarifying that the intervention was not limited to akara sellers but also included roasted plantain sellers, tomato sellers, vegetable sellers and pepper sellers.
Her remarks generated mixed reactions on social media, with some Nigerians questioning the focus on small-scale trading, while others defended the initiative as a form of grassroots economic empowerment.
Amid the debate, President Tinubu’s playful reference to his wife as “Iya Alakara” added a humorous twist to the controversy that has continued to attract public attention.
The First Lady has maintained that the empowerment initiative is aimed at supporting ordinary Nigerians engaged in small businesses and helping them improve their livelihoods.
