The United States has withdrawn the majority of its military personnel deployed to Nigeria for a joint counterterrorism mission focused on the Lake Chad Basin.
Despite the withdrawal, security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States is expected to continue, particularly in intelligence sharing and other forms of counterterrorism support.
The deployment was part of efforts to strengthen the fight against terrorism and other security threats in the Lake Chad region, where armed groups have continued to pose serious challenges to Nigeria and neighbouring countries.
The withdrawal of most of the personnel does not signal an end to security relations between both countries, as the United States will continue to share intelligence and cooperate with Nigerian authorities in areas of mutual security interest.
Nigeria has for years battled terrorism and insurgency in the North-East, with the wider Lake Chad Basin remaining a major focus of regional and international counterterrorism efforts.
The development marks a shift in the nature of American military involvement in Nigeria, with greater emphasis expected to remain on intelligence support and other forms of security cooperation rather than a large personnel presence.
