Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has agreed to pay up to $16.68 billion to settle lawsuits brought by US states over allegations that it deliberately designed its platforms to be addictive to children and teenagers.
The settlement resolves claims brought by 29 US states, which accused Meta of designing features that encouraged excessive use, misleading users about the safety of its platforms and improperly collecting personal data from children.
Under the agreement, Meta will introduce significant changes to how teenagers use Facebook and Instagram, including daily usage limits, restrictions on nighttime use, stronger parental controls and enhanced age-verification measures.
Meta has denied wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement to resolve the litigation. The agreement is still subject to court approval.
The settlement represents one of the largest financial agreements arising from allegations concerning the impact of social media on children and could significantly reshape how major platforms manage young users.
