Drunk Driver Dies in Midnight Crash at Alaka Under Bridge, Lagos

A tragic lone accident claimed the life of a middle-aged man late Saturday night after he reportedly drove under the influence of alcohol in the Surulere area of Lagos.

The incident occurred around 11:45 p.m. near the Alaka Under Bridge, when the driver, identified as the sole occupant of a navy blue Toyota Camry (EKY 311 GK), lost control while speeding inward Iponri.

Eyewitnesses said the vehicle somersaulted multiple times before coming to a stop, killing the driver instantly.

Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), under the newly inaugurated 24-hour Night Operations Squad for the Surulere axis, arrived swiftly at the scene to manage traffic and prevent further accidents.

According to preliminary investigations, forensic evidence confirmed that the driver was intoxicated at the time of the crash, a factor that severely impaired his judgment and reaction time.

LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who confirmed the incident, described it as “a tragic yet sobering reminder of the fatal consequences of drunk driving.”

He praised the swift intervention of the night patrol team, who secured the area, coordinated with officers from the Bode Thomas Police Division, and assisted in contacting the deceased’s family through his recovered mobile phone.

The victim’s remains were later released to his wife and relatives.

Bakare-Oki urged motorists to avoid driving under the influence, emphasizing that “no celebration or night out is worth a life lost on the road.”
