Envoy calls sport a bridge for cultural exchange at Chinese Ambassador’s Cup in Abuja
The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, has described the growing popularity of Wushu in Nigeria as a key symbol of cultural exchange and mutual respect between China and Africa.
Speaking at the finals of the Chinese Ambassador’s Cup Wushu Championship held in Abuja, Dunhai said the sport embodies discipline, self-improvement, and respect values shared by both Nigerian and Chinese cultures.
He noted that Wushu has “taken root and flourished” across Nigerian communities, linking its success to China’s Global Civilisation Initiative and ongoing China–Africa cooperation.
Dunhai revealed that Wushu will debut at the 2026 Dakar Youth Olympic Games, marking a milestone for African athletes.
The event drew large crowds at the National Stadium, with Nigerian athletes winning gold medals in several categories including Tai Chi, Sanda, and Taolu.
National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko praised the embassy’s efforts, calling Wushu “a sport of the future for Nigerian youth.”
