Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Hassan Wins Landslide Election Amid Deadly Protests

Opposition claims hundreds killed as UN expresses concern over post-election violence

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has secured a sweeping victory with 97.66% of the vote in a controversial national election marked by deadly protests and allegations of repression.

The electoral commission announced the results Saturday on state television, confirming Hassan’s dominance in all constituencies. However, the main opposition party, Chadema, claims that hundreds have been killed by security forces since the October 29 vote.

The unrest has triggered a nationwide curfew, internet shutdown, and global concern. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep worry over reports of civilian deaths and injuries.

President Hassan, who succeeded the late John Magufuli in 2021, has yet to comment publicly. Rights groups accuse her administration of “a wave of terror,” citing mass arrests and abductions ahead of the polls.

Analysts say the emphatic win consolidates Hassan’s hold on power but leaves Tanzania facing heightened scrutiny from international observers and human rights bodies.
