FG to Invest ₦12bn in Digital Research to Boost Nigeria’s Tech Innovation

Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, says the initiative will fund AI, connectivity, and digital skills projects across Nigerian universities.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a plan to invest ₦12 billion in digital research projects to accelerate national digital transformation.

Speaking at the 18th International Conference on Theory and Practice of Electronic Governance (ICEGOV 2024) in Abuja, Minister Bosun Tijani emphasized that the funding will strengthen innovation and inclusion across the digital economy.

Tijani explained that the government has already funded 55 research projects and will now establish three major research clusters focused on artificial intelligence, connectivity, and digital literacy.

The Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, also revealed that digital literacy will be fully integrated into the national school curriculum by 2026.

Chair of the ICEGOV Steering Committee, Elsa Estevez, urged governments to promote human-centered innovation and combat the spread of misinformation and fake news in digital spaces.

The new funding underscores Nigeria’s ambition to become a regional digital hub, supported by the forthcoming National Digital Economy Bill currently before the National Assembly.
