Nigeria Synchronises Power Grid with West African Network in Historic Feat

The Nigerian Independent System Operator successfully links the national grid with the West African Power Pool, marking a milestone in regional energy integration.

Nigeria has achieved a historic technical breakthrough after successfully synchronising its national electricity grid with the broader West African Power Pool (WAPP) network.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) announced that the synchronisation test—conducted on Saturday, November 8, 2025—linked the Nigerian grid with those of Niger Republic, Benin, and Togo between 5:04 a.m. and 9:04 a.m.

According to a statement jointly signed by NISO’s Board Chairman, Adesegun Akin-Olugbade, and Managing Director/CEO, Abdu Bello Mohammed, the achievement represents a major milestone toward a single, interconnected West African energy market.

“This successful synchronisation marks a historic milestone in regional energy cooperation and demonstrates NISO’s technical capacity to manage complex grid operations in line with international standards,” the statement said.

The integration is expected to enhance energy trade, stability, and economic cooperation across West Africa while strengthening Nigeria’s leadership role in regional development.
