ICPC secures conviction after officials duped job seekers with fake CBN, FIRS employment offers
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has secured the conviction of two National Assembly officials—Mustapha Mohammed and Tijjani Goni—for defrauding unsuspecting job seekers of ₦4.8 million under false pretences of securing employment with the CBN and FIRS.
Justice B.M. Bassi of the FCT High Court, Abuja, found both men guilty after they confessed to the fraudulent act.
ICPC spokesperson Demola Bakare said the victims, Saifudeen Yakub and Aminu Abubakar, petitioned the agency after the duo collected millions with fake promises of job placements.
Investigations revealed that the accused forged employment letters, demanded ₦4 million each, and even collected additional ₦300,000 per victim as a “medical screening fee.”
Following investigations, they were charged with forgery, conspiracy, and obtaining money under false pretence, but later reached a plea bargain under Section 270 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015.
Both men refunded the ₦4.8 million and were fined ₦100,000 each. The ICPC cautioned Nigerians against falling for similar scams, urging citizens to verify job offers through official government channels.
