Bad Bunny Seeks $456,312 in Legal Fees After Winning Copyright Case Linked to Joeboy’s “Empty My Pocket”

Petition filed in U.S. federal court requests emPawa Africa cover legal costs following court victory

Puerto Rican music star Bad Bunny and his legal team have petitioned a United States federal court to award $456,312 in legal fees following their victory in a copyright dispute connected to the song “Empty My Pocket” by Nigerian singer Joeboy.

The request seeks to have the legal costs paid by emPawa Africa, the music company founded by Nigerian entrepreneur and artist Mr Eazi. The case centered on claims relating to copyright and music ownership issues involving elements associated with the track.

Following the court’s decision in favour of Bad Bunny’s side, his legal representatives filed a motion asking the court to compel emPawa Africa to cover the expenses incurred during the litigation process. The petition argues that the fees reflect the substantial legal work required to defend the case in federal court.

The dispute attracted attention within the international music industry due to the involvement of prominent figures from both the Latin and African music scenes. Legal experts say the outcome and the request for reimbursement of legal costs could have implications for future copyright disputes involving global collaborations and cross border music production.

The court is expected to review the petition and determine whether the requested legal fees will be awarded as part of the final resolution of the case.
