Union warns of shutdown in state-owned universities amid unresolved disputes with government
The Calabar Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Academic Staff Union of Universities, has issued a warning of a looming “total, comprehensive and indefinite” strike across state-owned universities over unresolved issues with the Federal Government.
The union cited the non-implementation of existing agreements, unpaid allowances, and what it described as continued neglect of staff welfare as key reasons behind the proposed industrial action.
According to ASUU, repeated engagements with government authorities have failed to yield meaningful progress, leaving lecturers frustrated over outstanding commitments and deteriorating working conditions within the university system.

The Calabar Zone stressed that the warning should be taken seriously, noting that failure to address the concerns promptly could lead to a widespread shutdown of academic activities in affected institutions.
Education stakeholders have expressed concern over the potential impact of another strike on students and the already strained academic calendar, calling for urgent dialogue between the union and government representatives.
The development adds to ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s higher education sector, where disputes over funding, infrastructure, and staff welfare have frequently led to disruptions in recent years.
