The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, has disclosed that more than 840,000 foreigners are currently overstaying their visas in Nigeria, raising concerns about immigration compliance and border management within the country.
The minister made the revelation while speaking on ongoing reforms within the nation’s immigration system, noting that the government has begun implementing new measures aimed at improving the monitoring and regulation of foreign nationals entering and residing in Nigeria.

According to Tunji Ojo, the high number of visa overstays highlights the need for stronger immigration enforcement and more efficient tracking systems. He explained that authorities are working to modernise immigration processes through digital solutions that will help identify individuals who fail to comply with visa conditions.
The government has recently introduced several initiatives designed to strengthen immigration control, including improved data management and monitoring systems intended to track entry and exit records more effectively. Officials say these reforms will help reduce visa violations and enhance national security.
The interior minister emphasised that Nigeria remains open to legitimate visitors, investors, and tourists, but stressed that all foreign nationals must respect the country’s immigration laws and visa regulations. He added that the government will continue to strengthen its systems to ensure better compliance and accountability within the immigration framework.
