Over 6,700 Nigerians Sought International Protection in Cyprus Between 2021 and 2025

Latest asylum data highlights growing number of Nigerian applicants seeking international protection in the European nation over a five-year period.

A total of 6,704 Nigerians applied for international protection in Cyprus between 2021 and 2025, according to the latest country report published by the Asylum Information Database (AIDA).

The report, a project of the European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE), was compiled using official data from Cyprus's Asylum Service and the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA).

The figures reflect the number of Nigerian nationals who sought asylum or other forms of international protection in Cyprus during the five-year period, placing Nigeria among the countries with notable numbers of applicants in the Mediterranean nation.

International protection is granted to individuals who are unable to return to their home countries due to a well-founded fear of persecution, armed conflict, violence or other serious threats to their safety and fundamental rights.

The report provides insight into migration and asylum trends in Cyprus, which has experienced sustained pressure on its asylum system in recent years due to increasing applications from several countries.

The latest figures are expected to contribute to ongoing discussions on migration, refugee protection and international humanitarian obligations, as European countries continue to review policies aimed at balancing border management with the protection of vulnerable individuals seeking refuge.
