Former Nigerian First Lady Patience Jonathan has once again come under public discussion following renewed attention to her response during the abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls in April 2014.
The kidnapping of more than 200 schoolgirls from a secondary school in Chibok, Borno State, remains one of the most significant security incidents in Nigeria’s history and sparked widespread local and international outrage.
At the time, Patience Jonathan's public statements and interventions during the crisis generated intense media coverage and mixed reactions from Nigerians, with supporters and critics offering differing views on her handling of the situation.
The Chibok abduction drew global attention and led to the emergence of the "Bring Back Our Girls" campaign, which mobilised support from world leaders, civil society groups, and citizens demanding the safe return of the abducted students.
More than a decade later, discussions surrounding the incident continue to resurface in national conversations about security, governance, accountability, and the protection of schoolchildren.
The Chibok schoolgirls' abduction remains a defining moment in Nigeria’s security history and continues to influence public discourse on efforts to safeguard educational institutions and vulnerable communities across the country.
