States Deploy Forest Guards as Nigeria Intensifies Fight Against Rising Insecurity

Governments strengthen surveillance and protection of forest areas amid growing security concerns

Several states across Nigeria have begun deploying forest guards to enhance security and strengthen surveillance in forested areas as authorities intensify efforts to address rising insecurity across the country.

The initiative is aimed at improving monitoring of forests that have, in some instances, been identified as hideouts for criminal groups involved in activities such as banditry, kidnapping, illegal mining, and other security threats.

State governments say the deployment of forest guards will complement the efforts of conventional security agencies by providing local intelligence, monitoring remote locations, and supporting early warning systems in vulnerable communities.

The move comes amid increasing calls for stronger security measures to curb criminal activities in rural and forested regions, where difficult terrain often presents operational challenges for security forces.

Security analysts have noted that effective forest security could play a significant role in disrupting criminal networks, improving intelligence gathering, and enhancing the safety of communities located near forest reserves.

Many of the newly deployed personnel are expected to work closely with law enforcement agencies, local vigilante groups, and community leaders to improve coordination and strengthen security operations.

Stakeholders have welcomed the initiative but emphasised the need for proper training, adequate equipment, clear operational guidelines, and accountability mechanisms to ensure the effectiveness of the programme.

As insecurity remains a major national concern, authorities hope that the deployment of forest guards will contribute to broader efforts aimed at protecting lives, securing communities, and restoring public confidence in the country's security architecture.
