A sermon by Pastor Julius Ekweozor has sparked widespread debate after the cleric warned men against getting involved with widows, drawing criticism from many Christians and social media users.
In a sermon that began circulating online on Tuesday, Ekweozor claimed that no widow is truly single because, according to his teaching, a spiritual entity takes over the marriage following the death of a husband. He further alleged that men who become romantically involved with widows—even with good intentions—could face setbacks and curses unless certain spiritual rites are performed.
The remarks quickly generated backlash, with critics arguing that the claims lack biblical support. Many referenced 1 Corinthians 7:39, which states that a widow is free to remarry after the death of her husband, provided she marries "in the Lord."
Others also questioned why similar warnings were not directed at widowers, describing the message as a double standard that unfairly stigmatizes widows.
