United States Congressman Riley Moore has said the US Department of State cannot lift Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) amid continued attacks on Christians in parts of the country.
Moore said the designation remains a concern because of what he described as ongoing attacks against Christians in Nigeria's Middle Belt.
The congressman's comments come amid continued international scrutiny of Nigeria's handling of attacks involving religious communities and broader concerns over insecurity in parts of the country.
The Country of Particular Concern designation is used by the US government in relation to countries where it determines that severe violations of religious freedom are occurring.
Moore's position is expected to add pressure to ongoing discussions between Nigeria and the United States over religious freedom, insecurity and the protection of vulnerable communities.
The Nigerian government has previously maintained that insecurity in the country should not be viewed solely through a religious lens, stressing the complex nature of violence involving terrorism, banditry, communal conflicts and other security threats.
