Feed Them, Don’t Just Pray for Them!” — Viral Tweet Sparks Debate on Hunger in Churches

A viral post by social media commentator @DanielReegha has stirred conversation across Nigerian social media platforms after he urged churches to feed members physically not just spiritually.

In the trending tweet, Daniel wrote:

“Share food after service and see how people will be happy to be in church. Everything is not ‘Prayer, Scatter, Fire.’ Jesus knew the importance of feeding his followers. Today, a lot of people in the church are hungry and even thinking of what to eat after service. The church can, from time to time, provide free food, especially if service lasts too long. Food is also a lot of people’s love language, so why not?”

The tweet, which has now garnered thousands of likes and retweets, sparked a lively debate online. While many users agreed with his perspective, saying “a fed body listens better than an empty stomach,” others argued that churches are not restaurants and should focus solely on spiritual nourishment.

Some commenters referenced the biblical story of Jesus feeding the 5,000, noting that the act of sharing food helped strengthen faith and community. Others criticized the idea, calling it “entitlement culture” and warning that it could encourage people to attend services for free meals instead of genuine worship.

Despite the divided opinions, the conversation has highlighted growing concerns about the economic realities facing many Nigerians — and how churches could play a bigger role in supporting their members beyond the pulpit.

As one user quipped under Daniel’s post: “Even Jesus didn’t let his followers go home hungry the church should take notes.”

  1. That's the naked truth some churches don't want to hear
