Labour Congress President Joe Ajaero decries rising vote-trading, urges Nigerian journalists to expose electoral corruption and reclaim public trust ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned what it describes as the “commodification of democracy,” accusing the political elite of turning votes into tradable items.
Speaking at the launch of the Report on Electoral Trust organized by the International Press Centre (IPC) in Abuja, NLC President Joe Ajaero said Nigeria’s democracy has been hijacked by a privileged few.
Ajaero lamented that electoral processes meant to reflect the people’s will have become markets “where votes are auctioned, and democracy is subverted.”
He cited the worsening living conditions of Nigerians—ranging from poverty to crumbling infrastructure—as consequences of bad governance born from rigged elections.
Calling on journalists to act as “the voice of the voiceless,” Ajaero urged media professionals to resist political propaganda, expose electoral malpractice, and stand on the side of truth.
The NLC president also praised the collaboration between IPC, NAWOJ, and GOCOP, describing it as vital for restoring public confidence in Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
