Nol Ashbree on Mental Health, Industry Pressure, and His 2026 Comeback

Nigerian-Born Australian DJ and Executive Producer Nol Ashbree Opens Up on Emotional Struggles, Self-Care, and Resilience in Music

Renowned music executive and DJ Chinedu Damian Asoh, popularly known as Nol Ashbree, has broken his silence on the pressures, temptations, and mental challenges of the music industry. As he prepares for a highly anticipated comeback in 2026, he shares rare insights into how he maintains emotional balance, stays grounded, and uses his platform to inspire his community.

The Pressure of Being a Music Executive and Artiste

Being both a music artiste and executive producer comes with immense responsibility. “There are moments when things don’t sound the way you envisioned, or people don’t deliver the quality you expect,” Nol Ashbree says. “It can pull you away from your focus, but you have to recollect yourself and keep moving.”

For Nol, music is about more than immediate success — it’s about legacy. His sound, a blend of Afro-fusion, EDM, Afrobeats, and Afro-soul, is crafted with a global audience in mind. “I’m making music for future generations,” he explains. “That mindset keeps me grounded and focused on long-term goals, not just the reward now.”

Emotional Intelligence and Communication in Music

Nol Ashbree emphasizes that emotional awareness is critical in navigating fans, collaborators, and public perception. “You can’t be fake, but you must be thoughtful,” he says. Learning when to pause, reflect, and respond — sometimes with the guidance of PR — has been one of the most important lessons in his career.

He draws inspiration from cultural icons like Fela Kuti, noting that an artiste’s image and message often outlive them. “Your public persona matters. How people see you will define your legacy,” he adds.

Self-Care: Survival, Not Luxury

For Nol Ashbree, self-care isn’t optional. It’s essential for maintaining mental, emotional, and physical health in an industry full of demands. His self-care practices range from morning tea and long walks to tennis, socializing with friends, and occasionally disconnecting from social media.

“When I’m into music, I’m fully into it. When I’m not, I step away and focus on my personal life,” he says. “That balance keeps me sane and allows me to produce music with intention and focus.”

Community, Roots, and Giving Back

Nol Ashbree believes no artiste is bigger than their roots. Music, he says, is a tool for connection and empowerment. “My sound carries a message: you’re not alone, and you can do it. My journey — the ups and downs — isn’t for people to copy, but to inspire them to create their own path.”

He praises artistes who stay grounded and connected to their communities, citing figures like Victor Osimhen and Wizkid as examples. “Nigeria is the fuel behind my growth. Everything I’ve learned and continue to learn is built on my community and my identity.”

Staying Grounded Amid Temptation

Candid about industry temptations, Nol Ashbree says, “You’ll encounter drugs everywhere. If you can stay away, do. If you can’t, don’t get hooked. What keeps me going is self-belief — believing in my own ability to create and achieve.”

Advice for Upcoming Artistes

He encourages patience, focus, and authenticity. “Don’t let societal pressure rush you. Take small steps every day, and you’ll get where you want to be.” Mental health is as important as physical health, he adds, urging creatives to seek advice and support without shame.

Looking Ahead: 2026 and Beyond

As part of his comeback, Nol Ashbree will release his first track of the year to feature Zilla Oaks, set for march and subsequently June and Konzi. He promises more unique sounds and messages in his upcoming projects.

“Stay resilient. Keep pushing. Eventually, you’ll become the version of yourself you’ve always wanted,” he concludes.
