Acts of bravery in emergency situations are commendable, but they must be guided by sound judgment and safety principles, according to Security Expert and Public Safety Advocate, Moruf Yusuf, popularly known as Ojogbon.
In the latest edition of The Secure Mind series titled "Avoid Becoming a Victim While Attempting a Rescue," Yusuf stressed that many well-intentioned rescue attempts end in tragedy because individuals rush into dangerous situations without the necessary training, equipment or professional support.
He explained that emergencies involving drowning, falls from heights, fires, electrical hazards or other life-threatening incidents require careful assessment before any intervention is made. While the instinct to help others is natural, acting impulsively can result in additional casualties, placing both the victim and the rescuer in greater danger.
According to Yusuf, when someone falls into deep water, jumps from a height or is trapped in another hazardous situation, the safest and most responsible first step is to immediately alert the appropriate emergency response agencies while seeking safe ways to assist without exposing oneself to unnecessary risk.
He noted that many fatalities occur because untrained individuals attempt physical rescues beyond their capabilities. In water-related emergencies, for example, an untrained rescuer may also be pulled underwater, while in fire or structural collapse incidents, entering unsafe environments without protective equipment can prove fatal.
Yusuf emphasised that a safety-conscious individual understands the limits of personal intervention and recognises when professional responders are better equipped to handle an emergency. He encouraged members of the public to remain calm, call for help promptly, secure the scene where possible and use only safe rescue methods that do not place additional lives at risk.
He further urged Nigerians to familiarise themselves with basic first aid, emergency response procedures and the contact numbers of relevant emergency agencies, noting that preparedness can significantly improve outcomes during critical situations.
According to him, effective rescue operations are measured not only by saving lives but also by ensuring that rescuers do not become victims themselves.
He concluded by reminding citizens that responsible action during emergencies contributes to stronger public safety and reinforces a culture of preparedness within communities.
