Burkina Faso Officially Severs Diplomatic Ties With France

Military-led government cites sovereignty and non-interference as relations with its former colonial power reach a historic low.

Burkina Faso has officially severed diplomatic relations with France, marking a significant escalation in the deteriorating relationship between the West African nation and its former colonial ruler.

The decision, which took immediate effect, was announced by the Burkinabè government, which accused France of failing to uphold the principles of mutual respect, non-interference and respect for the country's sovereignty. Authorities also alleged that France supported "subversive networks" and terrorists, claims that France has denied.

In response, the French government expressed regret over the move, describing it as "hostile and unfounded," and said it is considering reciprocal measures while urging French nationals in Burkina Faso to exercise heightened vigilance.

The latest development marks a further breakdown in relations that have steadily worsened since Burkina Faso's military government came to power in 2022, following the withdrawal of French troops, the expulsion of French diplomats and growing tensions over security and foreign policy.
